Two leaders in Oregon’s burgeoning craft beer industry have signed on to raft the mighty Rogue River with triple “W” in 2011. One is a wildly popular Oregon brewer; the other a spokesWOMAN (cheerleader) for the craft beer industry.

OK, lets talk about these fascinating folks. Jamie Floyd owner Ninkasi Brewing CoFirst, Jamie Floyd. Jamie is the owner of Ninkasi Brewery, a craft brewery located in Eugene, Oregon. In 2001, Floyd and co-owner, Nikos Ridge developed Ninkasi Brewing Company, named for the Sumerian goddess of brewing and fermentation from the ancient agrarian civilization in Mesopotamia. “Brewing has been a part of civilization since the beginning,” Floyd says. “I’m just the village brewer.” Floyd will bring his “village brewer” perspectives to our 2nd annual Rogue River “raft & craft” trip. Check out this interesting article/video on Floyd and Ninkasi, written by the Flux staff at the University of Oregon.

Ginger Johnson owner of women enjoying beer

Second, Ginger Johnson. This human-ball-o-fire knows so much about the emerging craft beer marketplace that she literally oozes knowledge (and she loves to share that knowledge). Owner of the famous www.womenenjoyingbeer.com website, Ginger’s focus is on opening up the world of beer to women but she is an equal opportunist–making sure that she never excludes the male audience. Just look at that smiling face. Her understanding of the craft beer market is infectious…and she will be on the raft trip to answer questions about craft beers and pairing them with some not so obvious food choices.

Diane Paulson and David Eliason, owners of Organic Nation Spirits embody the entrepreneurial spirit. They have a passion for the southern Oregon organic gin and vodkas that they create. Known as a micro-distillary, Organic Nation Spirits believes that their small batch creations make a difference. Must be true because consumers are sipping up and taking notice! This small company is winning all kinds of taste awards.

Well, we love quality and passion too. So it isn’t any surprise that we have made friends with Diane and Dave and have asked them to be the stars of our last 2010 lodge trip. They will be bringing their beautiful spirits with them and creating signature martinis each night after a long day of sun and fun on the beautiful Rogue River. We’re calling the trip Martini Madness. You might just call it fantastic!

Why is it that the June 2010 Whitewater Warehouse gourmet wine, food and rafting trip sold out in less than two months? The company had offered these gourmet Rogue River rafting trips several times over the last decade but none had ever sold out this quickly. The trip was so popular, Whitewater Warehouse had to open up a second 2010 gourmet rafting and kayaking trip to satisfy the appetites of their valued customers! This second trip has a bit of a twist to it. Whitewater Warehouse’s friends, Dave and Diane who own southern Oregon-based Organic Nation Spirits, have agreed to serve signature martinis made with their organic Gin and Vodkas before dinner each evening.

This second trip is scheduled for August 29 – 31, 2010 and is a lodge-to-lodge rafting and kayaking adventure. “Lodge trips” simply means guests stay in rustic cabins each evening (the cabins have private, attached bathrooms/showers). Besides those yummy martinis, travelers will be served gourmet dinners paired with complementary wines by chef Matt Morse. Matt is an interesting fellow. Over his lifetime, he has been a rafting guide, owned upscale restaurants, owned a large-selection wine shop, and traveled extensively through Europe…searching for recipes, foods, and wines that tickled his taste buds.

This August 29 – 31, 2010 “Martini Madness” and gourmet food and wine trip is already half full (there is room for 24 guests) so don’t hesitate to call Whitewater Warehouse or email them for further information. Email is: fun@whitewaterwarehouse.com  or call their friendly staff at:  1-800-214-0579.

Thinking we might be a wee bit off our soon-to-be-Halloween rockers? Spirits in southern Oregon…and, organic spirits, no less! Well, it’s no trick. Organic Nations Spirits doesn’t brew witchy concoctions but this unique company does distill the finest organic gin & vodka! What a treat. Such quality products by local folks who are committed to producing unique, award-winning spirits.

How do they do it? Owners Diane Paulson (CEO of the company) and her husband David Eliasen’s (V.P./Distiller) personalities reflect their products: clean, crisp and full of life. We stole a moment with Diane recently and she mentioned that not many folks know what a micro-distillery really is. “Although there is really no widely accepted definition of what constitutes ‘craft,’ ‘artisan,’ or ’boutique’ spirits they are usually handmade in small batches, often from organic and/or sustainably grown ingredients. And in the case of our gin, it was a simple mistake.
“David was suppose to steep the botanicals (a mixture of 12 different plants including juniper berries and angelica root) for 12 hours but forgot and left it for 24 hours. So he mixed the 24-hour gin with the 12-hour gin and came up with the taste he was after.” Paulson calls it a “coincidence of creativity.”
The botanicals they use are special too. Supplied by a strictly organic grower and supplier, Pacific Botanicals of Grants Pass, they have focused on the best organic products and pure water (David’s background was as a water expert). This focus on the “devil is in the details” (sorry, we couldn’t resist the pun) means that their vodka and gin is in an elite class of spirits….one of very few organic spirits certified by Oregon Tilth.
We were so impressed by David & Diane’s obsession with quality that we’ve asked to partner with them on an upcoming Rogue River rafting trip (you know by now that quality is also our obsession) in late summer of 2010. Look for more details in an upcoming blog….

In the mean time, check out what they call their mixology spotlight.
